How reverse face search works

A plain-English guide to finding where a face appears online

Reverse face search flips a normal image search around. Instead of typing words, you start with a photo of a face and ask: where else does this face appear across the public web? It is the fastest way to check who you are really talking to online, or to see where your own photos have ended up.

How Facefinder works, step by step

  1. You upload one clear photo. A single, sharp, front-facing face works best.
  2. We scan billions of public web images. The face is compared by visual similarity against images indexed from publicly available web pages.
  3. You get a ranked list of matches. Each result shows a similarity score and a link to the public page where the face appears, so you can verify it yourself.

How accurate is it?

Every match is scored by visual similarity, not by identity. A high score means two faces look a lot alike, which is a strong lead, but it is not proof that they are the same person. Many unrelated people look similar, lighting and angles change how a face reads, and old or edited photos can throw a result off. Treat a match as a starting point and always confirm it independently before drawing any conclusion.

How to get the best results

Is it private and safe?

Facefinder searches faces that are already public on the web; it does not access private accounts. The photo you upload is used only to run your search and is deleted within 24 hours. We never sell your data and never post your search anywhere. You can read the full Privacy Policy, and if your own face shows up and you want it gone, use Remove my photo.

What it must not be used for

Facefinder is a search tool for personal use, not a background-check service. It is not a consumer reporting agency and its results are not a consumer report. You may not use it to screen anyone for employment, credit, insurance, or housing, and never to stalk, harass, or harm anyone. You must be 18 or older. See the Terms of Use for the full rules.
